Brian Butterfield

Brian Butterfield is an architect and exhibition designer focused on the future of cultural spaces. As a design director at WHY Architecture, he leads interdisciplinary teams working at the intersection of architecture, institutional strategy, and visitor experience. His practice explores how museums and cultural institutions can evolve to meet changing social, technological, and environmental conditions—rethinking the role of architecture not just as a container, but as an active participant in shaping meaning and access.
Brian previously served as senior design manager at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and has taught at the Yale School of Architecture. He is an affiliate member of the Global Cultural Districts Network (GCDN) and also serves on the advisory board of the arts non-profit Pocoapoco in Oaxaca, Mexico.
