Freddy Mamani is a Bolivian self-taught architect known for developing a Neo-Andean Architecture, inspired by the culture of the Aymara, the Indigenous people of the Andes. His practice is based in El Alto, a city above La Paz, the Bolivian capital, which has been transformed in the past decades by the architect’s ornate, colorful buildings. Freddy draws references from the ruined ancient city of Tiwanaku and the vibrant colors of traditional Aymara textiles. Mamani has completed more than 70 buildings, called cholets, in El Alto, and more than 100 across Bolivia. His architecture has been praised for its originality and social impact, with his cholets serving as homes, business premises, and community spaces for a new social class of upwardly mobile Indigenous Bolivians.
