Pedro Arlès

Pedro Arlès is one of the organizers of the Mais Favela, Menos Lixo (More Favela, Less Trash) project, which, since 2022, has been developing solid waste self-management actions in Aglomerado da Serra—the largest favela in the city of Belo Horizonte, and one of the largest in Brazil. Through the project and its partners, it has been possible to create gardens in previously degraded areas, publicize rights, manage recyclables and rubble and develop urban furniture adapted to the specific characteristics of the favelas and based on local knowledge. Among the projects are more than 800 “garbage-hooks” installed throughout the community. The small pieces of furniture suspend household waste until it is collected, preventing it from polluting rivers and forests. In addition to the UFMG School of Architecture, the project is built with the public school Professor Edson Pisani, the Projeto Itamar, the Igreja Metodista da Serra, Roots Ativa and Cerâmica Santana.
“When the Young Climate Prize recognizes local work by young people from all over the world, we are transformed. Not simply because of the recognition, but because of the chance to show that there, in that space where everyone overlooked, transformation is taking place.”
