The reconnection City-River

When Mexico’s Grijalva River overflowed in 2007, two-thirds of the city of Villahermosa was left under water. As rising temperatures expose the region to ever-higher risk of flooding, an urban landscape project from lauded architect Mauricio Rocha’s Taller de Arquitectura is nurturing urban climate resilience by reconnecting the city to its river. Spanning six kilometers along both sides of the Grijalva, Rocha’s Malecón de Villahermosa includes a curving boardwalk and the ecological restoration of the river’s banks, creating green areas that serve as floodplains during rainier seasons, and resurface as generous waterside public spaces in the warmer months. Through simple, sensitive design, Rocha’s project offers a model for an architecture of adaptation, built to stand the unpredictable tests of climate breakdown.
