What do we learn in between the classrooms?

Alia Farid is an artist whose work moves fluidly between Kuwait and Puerto Rico, two contexts that shape her interest in overlooked histories, colonial entanglements, and the politics of urban and social space. Working across film, installation, and public intervention, she often addresses how infrastructures of oil, water, and education structure collective memory and daily life. Farid has exhibited internationally, including at the 2022 Whitney Biennial, the 2022 Venice Biennale, and institutions such as the Power Plant, Toronto, and Kunsthalle Basel. In addition to her artistic practice, she has engaged deeply in curatorial projects, notably as curator of The Space Between Classrooms at the Swiss Institute, New York. This exhibition investigates how the architectural and structural parameters of archetypical schools limit learning, while exploring alternative pedagogies, collective knowledge, and the reimagining of educational spaces.
