Listen to the Landscape

Andra Matin is one of Indonesia’s most venerated architects, whose work bridges tradition and modernity across the nation’s 17,000 islands. His celebrated design for Banyuwangi Airport in East Java—open to the breeze, planted with indigenous greenery, and adapted from regional vernacular—reimagines aviation infrastructure as a porous, climate-responsive landscape. Awarded the 2022 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the terminal exemplifies his philosophy that architects, even if unable to reform carbon-intensive industries at large, have both the power and duty to reduce the impact of their own. Through his Jakarta-based studio, Matin has realized over a hundred projects that stimulate dialogue between the global and the local, drawing on modernization to sustain native material cultures. Rooted in the ambitions of Tropical Modernism yet deeply sensitive to Indonesia’s ecosystems, his practice demonstrates how architecture can adapt to its environment, conserve energy, and invite the landscape through the door.
