The Nomad Garden at Summit 2025

Winner of the Young Climate Visionary award, Mohamed Salem Mohamed Ali, 23, is a farmer and artist from the Sahrawi refugee camp, Algeria. He was mentored by Dubai-based writer and curator Brendan McGetrick. Mohamed’s project, The Nomad Garden, is sited in Algeria’s Smara refugee camp, where the arid climate has forced Sahrawi refugees to rely heavily on humanitarian aid for their sustenance. As rising temperatures exacerbate the strain on life in this harsh environment, Mohamed is using his garden to experiment with alternative approaches to desert agriculture—including “sandponic” and hydroponic systems—as potential solutions to growing food insecurity within his community.
