The Voices

Alice Rawsthorn speaking at The World Around Summit 2023.

Design critic Alice Rawsthorn highlighted the historical lack of diversity in design criticism, and examined the repercussions of this trend continuing.

Rawsthorn pointed out that because the small number of those engaged in critical debate on design are overwhelmingly white, cis-male and based in the Global North has led to vicious cycles of design decisions that have had a profound impact on the lives of billions of people. She therefore advocated for a much more inclusive design community, in order to ensure that we have the multiplicity of design voices needed to make smart decisions for the world.

“It stands to reason that we need the best possible designers to act as these change agents and if we don't get them, if they only represent one gender, one heritage, one body type, or one geography, we lose out,” she said. “The design community must be reflective of us all, and until that happens, billions of people's lives and our planet will continue to be adversely affected.”
